Marsala

The first #monthlymani post of the year is all about the colors of 2015. Specifically, the colors on Pantone Fashion Color Report Spring 2015.  While there are so many lovely hues to choose from I’m focusing in on the shade Marsala (which also happens to be Pantone’s color of the year). The first time I saw this shade I was not a fan. I did not like that it was muddy red or how it reminded me of a dated power suit. However, the longer I looked the more drawn to it I became. Marsala is just a few shades shy of burgundy but, unlike the in-your-faceness (no this is not a word, yes I am still going to use it) of burgundy, this shade is more laid back, soothing even. When trying to find inspiration for the manicure I was to create I found this on Pinterest. The photo is of the manicure models rocked at the Rebecca Minkoff Fall 2014 NYFW show. I liked the combination of the colors in said photo but since Marsala isn’t as aggressive as the burgundy the model was wearing, I paired it with a gunmetal shade of gray. I’m happily shocked by how much I like these colors together.

First, as always, I applied a thin layer of base coat followed by a layer of Marsala. Followed by a second coat of Marsala to the top half of each nail, creating a ombre like effect. I scraped of almost all the polish from the gunmetal polish brush and dabbed a very thin layer. Finally, I used a generous amount of the gunmetal polish on the tips of each nail. I like how the shades seem like they are bleeding into each other.

  1. Oooooh, Piniel, I love this! The two shades work so well together and the gunmetal is the perfect color for this type of ombre effect!! Gorgeous job! 🙂
